Rose of the Month

There are many outstanding roses, but too often we overlook miniature roses. Rainbow's End will delight you from the moment it first opens to the very end and it will not be the same color twice. This rose is both miniature in bloom and habit growing to less than two feet high and about two feet wide. I have two - one in full sun and one in partial shade from a crape myrtle on one side and variegated albelia on the other. Both are furious bloomers. If you'd like even more blossoms, use a little Messenger. The blossoms start yellow with red tips; over time the red takes over and what is left of the yellow turns to white. It is a wonderful rose to add to your landscape as it will fit in so many spots since it maintains it's small size. Unfortunately, this rose will require spraying and it may even lose most or all of it's leaves from blackspot, but it just bounces back. If you are interested in a larger version, there is a climbing Rainbow's End which grows 6 to 8 feet tall offered by Bridges Roses.

Rainbow's End was hybridized by Ham Saville and introduced in 1984 by Nor'East Mini Roses. It has been a very popular rose since it's introduction. In 1986 it was awarded the ARS Award of Excellence. This rose does well both in a pot and in the ground. It is quick to recover from a bloom cycle and reblooms quickly so you will see blooms almost continuously throughout the summer and tolerates our heat very well.

“This rose is one of the most beautiful Miniature Roses ever created. The blooms are deep yellow with red edges, aging to a red all over. The blending of the yellow and red is truly eye catching and usually draws murmurs of appreciation from everyone. The double florets with 35 petals have no fragrance. The foliage is small, dark green and glossy on an upright, compact, dense bush covered with blooms at all stages. This compact rounded growth habit makes it ideal as a container-grown plant.” Botanica's Roses.

There are many wonderful Miniature Roses and Rainbow's End is just one of the outstanding roses in this class. It will make a wonderful addition to your garden or landscape.
